Geriatric nursing event

Three Central Lakes College nursing students, accompanied by Connie Frisch, CLC director of nursing, attended the April 8 “Students Investing in Nursing’s Future – Geriatrics” workshop at Alexandria. Associate Degree candidates Kelly Hammerbeck, Brainerd, and Deb Bowman, Pierz, and Practical Nursing student Catherine Hebig, Little Falls, were at Alexandria Technical and Community College along with students from nine other campuses for sessions hosted by the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and Minnesota Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. This unique event provided an opportunity for the students to learn more about nursing care of older adults, network with students from other schools of nursing, and engage in an interactive activity to strengthen the focus of geriatric nursing in schools of nursing. Topics included “Wisdom and Reflection about Aging” led by professors emeritus from the U of M School Nursing; “Nursing Care of Older Adults – Career Opportunities and Options” with a panel of healthcare professionals; “Future of Nursing Education – Setting the Stage;” “Creating Innovative Ways to Learn about Geriatric Nursing – An Interactive and Creative Exercise;” and “Your Next Steps in Geriatric Nursing.”
